MANAGING DIRECTOR (hiring fall 2026)
Position Description: The Managing Director is a full-time, on-site role based in Greene, NY, responsible for the organization’s daily operations and long-term sustainability while managing budgeting, financial reporting, payroll, monthly and quarterly tax form filings, plus the facility itself. The MD coordinates with the Artistic Director on season planning, production schedules, and production details. The Managing Director leads fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor relations, sponsorship development, and special events. They also oversee marketing and audience development initiatives, and represent the theatre in meetings with stakeholders, board members, and local organizations to strengthen the company’s visibility and impact. The MD is the only full-time staff - this is a hands-on position that includes running box office, cleaning public parts of the facility, responsibility for housekeeping in our on-site actor housing, mowing the lawn, etc. Prior experience as a MD is NOT required. This is an excellent opportunity for someone organized and efficient, with a strong work ethic and relevant work experience, who is willing to learn new aspects of the position.
Company Description: Chenango River Theatre is a non-profit theatre company focused on producing 4 main stage shows from May to October that engage, educate, and inspire the local community. CRT prioritizes artistic integrity over commercial gain, occasionally producing world and regional premieres along with classic and contemporary plays. The company brings diverse stories to the stage and works with established and emerging talent, both onstage and off. Each production runs 3-4 weeks. We also present several booked-in events that foster cultural enrichment in the greater Binghamton area of upstate, NY. The current annual budget for the theatre is under $350,000 and the organization enjoys a solid fiscal foundation, stable control of our performance space, and a positive artistic and professional reputation in the community.
Expected Qualifications:
- Strong leadership and organizational skills. Prefer experience managing staff, budgets, and operations in non-profit arts or related environments.
- Proficiency in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and familiarity with non-profit accounting practices.
- Experience in fundraising and development, such as grant writing, sponsorships, and event-based fundraising.
- Skills in marketing and communications, including audience development, digital outreach, social media, and community engagement.
- Ability to work effectively with artistic teams, board members, donors, and volunteers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of theatre operations and production processes, and/or demonstrated interest in performing arts and cultural organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree in arts administration, business, non-profit management, or a related field – or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating welcoming environments for diverse artists, audiences, and staff.
- Willingness to work on-site in Greene, NY, including evenings and weekends aligned with performance and event schedules.
Benefits:
Managing Director is required to be available weekly from April 1 thru end of season in October. Healthcare, vacation schedule, and retirement contributions negotiable based on salary.
